7. I don't have a social security number. What should I do?

A: If you don't have a Social Security number, you must apply for one. There is no charge to apply for a social security number.

Call Social Security's toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213, and ask for an application for a social security card. You may also obtain this application at any Social Security Administration office. If you are 18 or older and have never had a social security number, you must go to a Social Security Administration office in person to apply. The application for a social security card can also be downloaded from the Social Security Administration's web site.
